Doesn’t It Break Your Heart That We, Humans, Are Superficial by Nature?

Are We All Just Shallow?

It is really a shame that even good people, by nature, can be so shallow. I tend to think about this sorrowful fact quite often because it is rather impossible not to notice just how deeply engrained our shallow behaviors are within daily life.

I will never forget this one moment that really showcased the struggle with this fact. Some months ago, I was among the people attending my friend’s wedding. I noticed everyone, including me, was so bothered about the way one looked. The guests were looking decent enough, donned in fine clothes, fancy, and appealing.

I have closely watched the couples chattering; their faces lively because camera light catches just the right smile. While scanning, I realized that people interacted based on appearance. While one group of beautiful girls sat in the corner and captured the attention of every other person in the room, the other group-nice, but not pretty by the social standard-was simply ignored.

I had seen this happen before. Unlike the girls who were not pretty, who were nice people, had interesting interests, and told good stories, they were simply left unseen and virtually invisible. But for them, I show empathy because I understand perfectly how hard they must fight…
